Way back in the early days of the cowboy ways, the average cowboy didn't use a belt buckle to hold up his pants. He usually wore suspenders or a belt that didn't require a big, fancy buckle.
The Western "Cowboy" Belt Buckle has been really popular since the 1920's when the movie makers showed cowboy's wearing big, shiny belt buckles.
Buckles are often silver plated, but the most expensive ones are solid gold. Some buckles are made of brass, german silver or metal.
