The cowboy wore a pair of chaps over his jeans to protect his legs from the cactus, brush and rocks. His chaps keep him warm also. Chaps are made of leather and come in many different styles. Shotgun chaps have narrow legs. Batwing chaps, like those worn by the bullriders in the rodeo, have wide legs. Equitation chaps usually have fringe on them and the horseshow rider generally prefers this style of chap. Cowboy chaps also are available made from angora goat hair or the wool from sheep. This style of chap is called a Woolie.
