Some folks prefer to put a bridle over top of a halter so when they're out on the trail for many hours, they can just pull up to a tree and slip the bridle off and tie their mount up for a rest. But if you prefer not to have all that bulk on your horse's head, the most popular option is to invest in a halter bridle. This bridle converts to a halter conveniently simply by unfastening the snaps on either side. You can even ride with your leadrope attached to the noseband ring and then loop the end around your saddle horn or tie it to a front tie string. You wouldn't want to tie your horse up with the reins. (They only do that in the cowboy movies)
